Carving the Scroll's Second Rank
Now we begin roughing in the second rank of the scroll.
We have cleaned up the first rank of the scroll. It is almost a finished carving to this point. Now we begin rough sawing the second rank of the scroll, roughing out the depth-of cut as we go. The depth-of-cut on the second rank is simply one half the height of the first rank at each point. Thus the second rank's "floor" is itself a geometrical spiral out toward the finial "button."
Using curved gouges, the second rank of the scroll is quickly formed. Then the "floor" is further defined, and worked into the flat surface of the first rank's floor. This will be further refined in final carving, as the lower shank's cove is blended into the second rank's floor. But that will become clear later...
