The Taptone Tuning Workshop covers one of the oldest skills in making stringed instruments, yet one that has yet to become accepted among mountain dulcimer builders.

This workshop introduces the concept of shaping the voice of the dulcimer through choice of woods, and demonstrates how to assess the properties of wood so you can do that. Then we introduce a technique for shaping the tone of the wood so we can move beyond merely assessing and choosing the wood that has the qualities we need.

Attendees with acquire these skills:

  • A specific method for assessing the tonal qualities of tonewood.
  • An introduction to the scraper plane and its use in shaping the voice of the dulcimer.
  • A method for tracking the reproducibility of the method
